La Voz de Indiana =Una Sociedad más Tolerante - A More Tolerant Society

La nominación de la gobernadora de Alaska, Sarah Palin, como candidata
a la vicepresidencia por el Partido Republicano, ha despertado el
interés de millones de personas dentro y fuera de Estados Unidos. En
efecto, en su presentación durante la Convención republicana, más de 40
millones de televidentes escucharon su discurso, el mismo que se
caracterizó por su sinceridad, amplitud y profundidad.

Si bien Hillary Clinton no pudo ganar la nominación dentro de su
partido, hecho que en cierta forma había ensombrecido la capacidad de
los norteamericanos para aceptar los cambios que viene experimentando
el mundo desde la caída del Muro de Berlín, y que se ha ido reflejando
en la apertura de mayores libertades y el surgimiento de sociedades más
tolerantes, la elección de la señora Palin ha cambiado la percepción de
la gente a nivel global sobre la sociedad norteamericana.

Ahora hay dos elementos claros en la carrera hacia la Casa Blanca. Por
un lado, la señora Palin, que representa la voz de las mujeres, y el
señor Obama, que representa a la minoría afroamericana. Es cierto que
no es una lucha por el poder basada en el género ni en la raza, pero
tampoco se puede negar que estos dos elementos presentes en la actual
campaña electoral sean factores diferenciadores de cualquier otra
campaña, y que vayan a ser determinantes en esta contienda democrática.

En cualquier caso, ya sea que gane la gobernadora Palin, la
vicepresidencia, o el senador Obama, la presidencia, desde la
perspectiva social será un hecho de suma trascendencia en el largo
camino de una sociedad esclavista y despectiva hacia una más
democrática y tolerante. Ahora bien, una mujer en el poder tendría un
significado mayor toda vez que, como bien lo dijo en su época Flora
Tristán, precursora del feminismo y el socialismo, si bien el sistema
(feudalista, mercantilista, capitalista, etc.) ha reducido al hombre,
éste ha hecho lo mismo contra la mujer, a lo largo de toda la historia
universal. De modo que, la victoria de Palin sería el triunfo de la
plena libertad sobre la opresión vergonzante en la historia de la
humanidad.

A estas alturas, como dijo Bill Clinton en su intervención en la
Convención demócrata, lo que cuenta no es quien gane, sino la
afirmación de la democracia y la plena libertad, donde el espíritu
evolucionado de su gente hace que esta nación avance hacia una sociedad
mucho más tolerante.

The nomination of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as the vice-presidency
candidate for the Republican Party, has awakened the interest of
millions of people inside of and outside the United States. Indeed, in
her presentation during the Republican Convention, more than 40 million
TV viewers listened to her speech, which was characterized by her
sincerity, width, and depth.

Although Hillary Clinton was not able to win the nomination within her
party, a fact that, in a certain way, had darkened the capacity of
Americans to accept the changes that the world has been experiencing
since the fall of the Berlin Wall and that have been reflecting
themselves in the opening of more freedoms and the emergence of more
tolerant societies, the election of Mrs. Palin has changed the
perception people have about the American society at a global level.

Now, there are two clear elements in the race toward the White House.
On one hand, Mrs. Palin, who represents the voice of women, and Mr.
Obama, who represents the Afro-American minority. It is true that it is
not a fight for power based on gender, neither race, but neither can it
be denied that these two elements, present in the current electoral
campaign. are differentiating factors from any other campaign, and that
they will be decisive in this democratic war.

Anyway, if either Governor Palin wins the vice-presidency, or Senator
Obama, the presidency, from the social perspective, it will be a fact
of supreme transcendence in the long way from a pro-slavery and
pejorative society toward a more democratic and more tolerant one.

Now then, a woman in power would have a greater meaning since —as Flora
Tristan, precursor of feminism and socialist, said it well in her time
–although the system (feudalist, mercantilist, capitalist, etc.) has
reduced man, this has done the same thing against women throughout the
history of the universe. So, Palin’s victory would be the victory of
full freedom over the bashful oppression in the history of humanity.

At these heights, as Bill Clinton said in his intervention during the
Democratic Convention, what counts is not who wins, but the assertion
of democracy and full freedom, where the evolved spirit of its people
makes this nation advance toward a much more tolerant society.
