THE ROBERTO OCASIO FOUNDATION AND JIM WADSWORTH PRODUCTIONS PRESENT "BOBBY SANABRIA & QUARTETO ACHÉ" AT NIGHTOWN JULY 10TH
Cleveland, Ohio - The Roberto Ocasio Foundation today announced that the Foundation and Jim Wadsworth Productions will present New York Latin-jazz artist, "Bobby Sanabria & Quarteto Aché," for a special one-night-only performance at Nighttown jazz-supper club on Thursday, July 10, 7:30pm (12387 Cedar Rd., Cleveland Hts.). Show admission is $20 per person; reservations are suggested through Nighttown, 216.795.0550, or first-come first-serve at the door.
Bobby Sanabria brings with him a rich history as drummer for eight years with the Godfather of Latin Jazz, Mario Bauzá, and his Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra as well as performing and recording with Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Dizzy Gillespie, Chico O'Farrill, Candido and other legends of the genre. A leader in the Afro-Cuban and jazz fields as a performer, composer, arranger, producer, bandleader, and multi-Grammy-nominated recording artist, Bobby has been impressing New York and international jazz audiences since the early 80's. His 20-piece-band CD, "Big Band Urban Folktales, " received the 2008 Jazz Journalists' Association Award and a mainstream-Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year.
Aché is the Yoruba-based word for power and positive energy. Indeed Sanabria and his critically acclaimed quartet exemplify that and more, showcasing a world view of the jazz continuum. "…this band rockets between bop, straight-up and charging, to the languorous bolero, to Cuban timba, to rhythms from Puerto Rico, Brazil and the Caribbean," wrote Ben Ratliff of the New York Times. "…Sanabria is not just a drummer but a historian, indeed one of the few authorities in the history of the crossover between jazz and Latin forms…"(www.bobbysanabria.com)
The Roberto Ocasio Foundation is bringing the Sanabria ensemble to Cleveland as part of its annual signature program, the July 8-11 Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Music Camp for instrumental, percussion, and vocal students, grades 7-12, at Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music. This year's curriculum includes a field-trip to Nighttown, with special support from owner, Brendan Ring, as part of Camp students' study of American and international jazz clubs of the past and current jazz and Latin-jazz scene. Bobby Sanabria will be the Camp's Artist-In-Residence for the third year, and his Quarteto Aché musicians will be included in the
Camp roster of instructors. He will also hold a full-day master class on July 9 for college-level and adult amateur and professional musicians, all instruments. Bobby additionally serves as Honorary Trustee on the Roberto Ocasio Foundation's Board
The RO Foundation, established in 2004 in memory of Roberto Ocasio, serves northeast Ohio young people in schools and colleges as well as non-school organizations and the general community through a year-round roster of programs which feature cross-cultural musical productions and music-education outreach projects.
