escapeLatino and mujerlatinablog.com have teamed up with Marcelina Robledo from Spunky Jump Productions (www.spunkyjump.com) a Latino Video Producer from Cincinnati, to interview Daniel Catán a Mexican Opera composer that was visiting Cincinnati promoting his Spanish Opera "Florencia en el Amazonas."
Florencia en el Amazonas is an opera in two acts. It contains elements of magical realism in the style of Gabriel García Márquez and uses a libretto by Marcela Fuentes-Berain, one of his pupils. The characters are inspired by García Márquez, but the story is not drawn directly from any of his works.
Mr. Catan is the first Mexican composer to have an opera produced in the United States. But he also is famous for his orchestral and chamber works and film music.
His famous other Spanish Operas are: Rappaccini's Daughter (1991); Florencia en el Amazonas (Florence in the Amazon) (1996); Salsipuedes, a Tale of Love, War, and Anchovies (2004); Il Postino (2008).
